igather:

I’m down with this recipe list, although sadly i lack the money and the type of country to make most of them happen. However I will just think on my toes and improvise. For example, instead of:

31. Sardines on toast

Grill three or four fresh, gutted sardines per person. Chop the ripest, sweetest tomatoes you can get hold of with a handful of black olives, two cloves of garlic, a small bunch of basil and a red onion. Season the chopped tomatoes with olive oil and a splash of vinegar. Divide the salad among slices of grilled bread. Serve the sardines on top of the tomatoey bread.

I say:

Boil up some water for grits. While water is boiling cut up white onion, green pepper if you like (not for me) and goat pepper. Along with a few tablespoons of vegetable oil start frying down some hunts tomato paste. When it darkens up add all vegetables to pan. When green pepper is a bit wilted open a can of sardines and add to pan, with the side of your fork gently or aggressively chop them into small pieces. Fry it all down until you just know you should stop. Throw in grits to boil.

for plating: add a spoon of butter to grits. center sardines, and if you do not have a nice pepper lime sauce on hand simply squeeze a lime on top and add a few more lashings of hot sauce just to make sure.

voila not only the $1.50 breakfast i bought from the truck on the side of the road yesterday but one of the reasons we all die from heart attacks at relatively young ages!
